5 Reasons Why You Should Do a Mud Run

Mud runs can be some people’s idea of heaven or hell. Whatever your feelings are on them, it’s a great way to push yourself out of your comfort zone and give them a go. If you’re not convinced, we’re sure you will be after reading our reasons why to take part!

  1. Not only do mud races challenge you physically, but they’re also mentally stimulating. Imagine running a long distance with having to challenge yourself with a mud obstacle run, ice baths and even water assault courses at some events!
  2. Why not get your friends together for a quirky and unusual activity to do together or even get your colleagues to join you as part of a team building exercise? Not only is this a fun and social event to take part in, it can also be a great way to raise money for a charity of your choice.
  3. Bored of road running and seeing the same tedious sights every day? Why not train for an obstacle course race? Not only will it build up your stamina, but it also involves a lot of strength. After all, you do have to haul yourself over 10 feet walls, carry heavy objects, duck under cargo nets and jump from heights!
  4. You’ll feel a great sense of achievement once you’ve passed the finish line! You’ll be full of mud, sweat and tears, but it’ll all have been worth it. You’ll find yourself comparing bruises with other competitors, showing off about it to your colleagues and planning your next one.
  5. They’re fun! The main thing is that you and your teammates enjoy yourselves, which we’re sure you will. With such a great community spirit, it’s hard not to. It’s not a naturally competitive sport, so it doesn’t matter what time you finish, it’s all about the camaraderie. Everyone helps and encourages each other no matter if you’re from a different team, so there’s no need to be worried about being left behind!

Events to Take Part In

Not sure what obstacle runs are on? Take a look at this list and there’s bound to be one near you! There are plenty more to choose from, but these are some of our favourites!

Tough Mudder - One of the most popular muddy runs is Tough Mudder. The full length course is between 10-12 miles and is designed to challenge your stamina, strength and mental ability and it most certainly will as you’ll be confronted with 20 plus obstacles on the way. If you’re not quite up to the 10k, they also offer a 5k version, which features 10 plus obstacles.

Spartan - Spartan offers four events with different difficulties, from “sprint”, to “super” to “beast” to “ultra”. The first asks you to complete 5k with 20 obstacles, the second cranks it up to 25 obstacles over 13km, the third has 30 obstacles over a half marathon distance and finally they offer “ultra”, which consists of 60 obstacles over 50k! If you’re looking for something a little bit different they also offer a trial run for those who want to explore some of the UK’s stunning scenery and if running alone isn’t for you, why not try The Hurricane Heat? A team based course that urges you to think creatively and requires elements of team building.

Total Warrior - Again, the Total Warrior has several different options to pick from based on your ability. Firstly, they have the original that consists of a 12k run and 25 obstacles. If this seems a little daunting to you then maybe opt for the Warrior Half, which is a 6k run and 13 obstacles. If you’re really feeling like pushing yourself, they have the Ultra Warrior, which is a timed challenge (5 hours) to see how many laps you can do!

Muddy Dog Challenge - A muddy dog challenge with your dog?! What is not to love? And if you don’t your dog most certainly will! Pick between either a 2.5k or a 5k run with your dog by your side, or on your own and raise money for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

The Nuts Challenge - This military themed mud run is not one for the faint hearted! There’ll be plenty of mud, a water assault course, cargo nets, scaling river banks and lots more! You can choose from levels, from 7km to 14km, 21km or 28km! So there’s definitely something to suit everyone.

Pretty Muddy - One of the easier courses is Pretty Muddy that everyone no matter what their ability can take part in. It’s not only fantastic fun, but the money raised goes towards Cancer Research UK.
